I have been absent for a while now and mostly because I have been trying to figure out what direction to take this blog in next. I have been stuck in a rut with it mainly because I just haven't had any motivation to write anything. Well, now I have decided to venture on a journey that will never end and I need your help! I have at last concluded that I need to head in the direction of a non-dairy, vegetable based possibly gluten-free diet!{AAAAAHHHHHH!} There, I said it! You probably can't tell but, I am totally shaking in my boots right now. I have had said "adventures" in the past and they haven't worked out like I planned:( I really believe that you are what you eat. Our bodies are always regenerating and if we ingest mostly junk, then that is all our bodies have to work with. Therefore that is what we become physically...I know, I know I don't like it either! I want to be able to eat whatever I want when I want it and feel awesome! Too bad I don't have a magic wand.

So, here is my dilemma. The way I think about health is {I am pretty sure} a lot different than most people. I don't like to eat any kind of oil. This is largely because my Dad is a health guru and has a genetic heart condition that I could inherit one day...scary huh?! Any kind of fat, I am turned off to, again it's largely due to family history and what my Dad has taught me. !~BUT~! I believe in moderation! I still need to fit into society! I also don't think honey is healthy because of the sugar content. I think that Agave Nectar and truvia are great substitutes. And lastly, salt and sodium....what can I say they are enemy!!!! Just kidding but, not really......

Here is the difficult part. I need to be able to do this and not fail at it. This is what I have to work with, I. LOVE. SWEETS! And so does my husband. My kids are young enough where they have no idea what is going on, good thing,( I have a 21month old and a 9 month old). Which brings me to another point...FOOD is the LAST thing on my mind with two HIGH maintenance toddlers running around! I am exhausted ALL. THE. TIME! But, if I eat better, exercise and get plenty of rest that should help right? It better...
Did I mention we are also in school{Dental} so my funds are limited?
Well, that about sums it up!
It's yummy too!

I combined some recipes so to get my desired product so this recipe is totally customizable!(Spell check says this isn't a word...is it? Maybe I spelled it wrong:)

I didn't take a picture of it, but it looked something like this....

photo credit
But, for my recipe I made a whole wheat crust.

Here we go:

First of all, consider how many pizzas you are going to make. I just wanted to do one and I found out the hard way that the recipe will make more than that. The hubs and I could only eat one piece...it was that thick:) So, just make sure! Or if you are like me and an impatient cook(meaning, I don't wait for the dough to rise and it turned out just fine:), you can always just buy a ready made crust or rely on Pillsbury for your basic pizza crust needs.

Here is the recipe just in case you want to make it yourself:

~The next step is where the creativity comes in! While the pizza dough is cooking, make a balsamic glaze for the sauce{ Combine 1 cup of balsamic vinegar and 2 Tbs of brown sugar in a sauce pan until it reduces to about a 1/2-1/4 cup}.
~1While both of those are cooking, chop your veggies and grate the cheese. I used onions, tomatoes and lettuce(don't use iceberg!).
~When the glaze and dough are finnished spread your most of your glaze{not all of it, you may want to save some to drizzle on top or your pizza or for dessert...}, on your crust. After the glaze is spread, sprinkle your onions and cheese on it{I used mozzerella but you can use whatever you would like....goat cheese would be interesting, don't you think?} Stick it back in the oven on broil to melt the cheese.
~When the cheese is melted, take it out of the oven and immediately sprinkle your fresh veggies on top! Cut and enjoy!

I drizzled more balsamic glaze on top of my pizza PLUS, for dessert I cut up a nectarine and ate it with that. It was DIVINE! Another dessert idea would be to have some kind of vanilla ice cream or whipped topping with fresh fruit, and drizzle the glaze on it. YUMO!

Thanks for stopping by and I would LOVE to know how your creations turned out. Gonna need some new ideas:)
Well, I DO! But, I not only LOVE to decorate...I LOVE to create it! See, I cant't{and won't} afford to buy nice, new furniture, shelves flowers, plants, baskets etc. I mean I COULD wait until we move into a house{in 4 years} OR I could just get creative! And to be honest...I would rather make it than pay full price.

So, it turns out that being a Dental School wife brings out some hidden talents{snicker}. So, I decided to share my creative side with you all:) This is thrown together "Before and After."

Here we go:

Just about every weekend my husband and I hit the garage sales. And a few weekends ago, we found this AWESOME mirror for only !$5!{I KNOW! I know....you can find some GREAT stuff}.
The mirror looked something like the top of this dresser:

Photo Credit

It is a little different...the mirror was about the same size but, it was detached from the dresser and there is an embellishment on the top{between the mirror and the frame, you will see what I mean later}.

I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with it, but !$5?! I could NOT pass it up! But, I soon came across how I wanted it to turn out {at least color wise} It's illustrated in this picture:

Obviously the wood is different but, I liked this idea:)

"How Do YOU Like Your Bum Wiped?"

Hello Everyone! {Yes, these pictures are of my adorable kids!}

So, how many of you buy wipes in bulk or on sale just to save a $1 or two? Ummmmm....ME! Then, I came across a recipe for homemade baby wipes! YES! Save money! Plus, they don't have the chemicals in them that can cause irritation and what not. So, if your child suffers from diaper rashes or the like, this may help!!!!

I got this recipe from the book "The Melaleuca Wellness Guide."{LOVE IT!} Look for it here.

"I like my bum wiped naturally"

All you need is:

~Water

~Paper towels{it's better if you use Viva or Bounty because they are stronger, or some people use reusable ones out of material like flannel, I personally am going to stick with disposable but, it's up to you}

~Some kind of container{I have seen people reuse old baby wipe containers to ice cream buckets, whatever you have lying around will do. Use what you already have!}

~Children's Shampoo or Bodywash{be careful what kind! Some of the ingredients are very harmful! Look for "Quaternium 15" or “Q-15” which is formaldehyde or for other harmful ingredients that are found in children's bath products refer to this article) I will use Koala Pals Hair Wash. This product is from my favorite chemical-free/kid safe store.

~Baby Oil{again, be careful of the ingredients!}

~Tea Tree Oil{optional}, this helps if your wipes mold in your container.

How to:

There are a couple ways to prepare the paper towels to become wipes. Of course this would probably depend on your container:)

#1: You can cut the paper towels in half once, so then you double your quantity of wipes

#2: Cut the paper towels in half then in half again the other way so they lay flat.
{side note: don't remove the cardboard yet, trust me it will come out later}

To prepare the solution:

Once you cut the paper towels how you want them stick half of them in a container with a lid.
Add 2 cups of water, 1-2 tablespoons of children's shampoo or body wash and 2 tablespoons of baby oil. If you encounter mold add Tea Tree Oil. Now, cover and let them soak for 10 minutes{still don't remove the cardboard}. Once they are soaked through, now pull the cardboard from the center and pull the wipes from the center and rip off. Easy Peasy!!!!

{Side Note: If you cut your paper towels in half the two different ways, then the cardboard will come off before you soak them}
Forgive me as I personify where I live:) I know I have been driving home{pardon the pun}the existence of chemicals in our homes and our lives. Well, I have become a believer! TRUST ME, I wasn't before! I didn't think it mattered...at least not to the extent I had heard on the news and what not. The news always blows things out of proportion right?
Here is my conclusion thus far, IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE!!! I didn't expect it too! Especially if you convert your home{I am doing it slowly}to being more chemical free.

I am also a HUGE fan of the medical field and scientific research and more and more studies are showing the harmful effects of chemicals on our children, spouses, pets, granparents, parents etc. And not just small things we are talking Alzheimers, Asthma, Leukemia, Brain Cancer{I know...everything causes cancer}, mental retardation and many more.

Now, I know you are asking yourself, "All that from chemicals? I want to see proof!" Don't blame ya! I thought overly protective parents and environmentalists{have you ever noticed the word"mental" in that word?Just sayin'}went around barking about it! Well, now I have joined the club:){Guess you could say I am "mental" too:} I don't think I could ever go back to the cleaners I used to use!

Since you and I are like minded, let me direct you to some references:{disclaimer: some of the links on these pages don't work...sorry, but what does is GREAT info!} Here, Here, Here, oh and Here, hmmm...Here, Then Here. Wait one more! HERE!

These resources have really opened my eye about living chemical free...or at least trying! Hope this was insightful!
Can you believe it? I actually found a natural and chemical-free product that gets paint out of carpet and marker(permanent and RED!) out of white shirts! True Story! The product is called Sol-U-Mel. It's from my favorite Eco-Friendly Store Want proof and not just from me? Here it is: My Sister-in-Law(love her!) spilled some paint in one of her rooms in her house and tried EVERYTHING to get it up and nothing worked!

She said,"The paint was brown...and white...or who knows maybe it was red, it has been there for years I don't know!!! The white paint was my doing about 3 weeks ago and IT'S ALL GONE!"--via Facebook
And that Cascade is supposed to rectify the situation? Well, what if I forgot TWO nights or THREE nights? Would Cascade be able to tackle THAT? I don't really know, but what I DO know is I found a product that WILL! It's called Diamond Bright, it's chemical free and it makes my dishes shine! The product is from my favorite Eco-Friendly store. If you want to see more click here. A Diaper Box?The title says it all! I was so delighted when I found this tutorial! I don't know about you but, organizing is NOT my forte! I need professional help! I even thought about paying someone to teach me how to organize because I am so bad. But one thing I learned from my Mom, Mother-in-law and others, is containers are your friend! Ok, fair enough, except the PRICE TAG! SheEsH! Even when they are "on sale" they are too expensive for me to buy. Especially the cute ones{bummer}. So I had concluded{before I saw this container tutorial}, that if containers are the answer to my organizing problems, then I am in trouble and so are my money resources. HOWEVER! Thanks to the creative minds of today, I can feel creative AND save money{LOVE IT!}

I LOVE the one ones on the right{plus, they are easier to make} You would never know these were made form plain cardboard boxes!!! They look great! Ya? And better yet, create your own twist on them! Customize them to match your decor! Make them as simple or as complex as you want! Don't you just hate it when the ugliest container is on sale and the "perfect" one is the most expensive? Ya, been there...

Whose to say the creator of the so called container should make the decision on what you put in your house, huh? Well, this is this is how I feel about it: I am going to Make My Own!!HA!

I found the tutorial from the blog Positively Slendid. Check out this website! I may have hope in the organization world after all!
The salad I made this time I added more veggies. The more veggies the better! I also took a pro biotic from my favorite store and WOW did it work! I will spare you the details but the vitamins I am taking are awesome!

Back to my delicious salad....

This time, instead of just tossing the vegetables in the bowl right after I cut them, I seasoned them and actually "grilled" them in my pan with olive oil....yummy! The flavors of the vegetables are sweetened if you grill, bake or fry them. I learned that from the Food Network(I basically lived on the couch for two years because I was really sick and pregnant with my babies so I watched A LOT of TV aka Food Network and TLC:)
So, here is a couple pictures and the recipe...

Lettuce(of course!)
Asparagus( I had never used this vegetable before and I really liked it!)
Tomatoes
Blueberries
Chicken(Left over from last night, seasoned with Mrs. Dash Table Blend)
Salad Dressing(The Super Fruit one I used last night too, you know me and the sweet stuff!)

Hope you enjoy!
I am trying different green salads everyday. Today is the first one, I know...I started in the middle of the week. But, usually good food habits don't continue if you start on Monday:) I told you my infatuation with sweet things right? Well, I just couldn't NOT do a sweet salad...I promise I didn't add any sugar:) In fact I only like a small hint of dressing on my salads. I totally took a picture of the salad too! Ain't it pretty? Food Network chefs always say you eat with your eyes first. Doesn't this just make you want to dig right in?

Well, before you fork the computer here is the recipe:D

The salad I tried today was strawberry inspired. I LOVE strawberries! Here is the low down:

Lettuce(preferably not iceberg)
Strawberries
Walnuts
Green Onions
Mozzarella Cheese
Chicken(I cooked it with Mrs. Dash Table blend, I am not a fan of salt)
Passion Fruit Vinegrette( You can really use any dressing you want, I REALLY liked this one on it. However, we only used a few squirts which probably amounted to a couple teaspoons, we didn't saturate our salad!)

Hope you enjoy! And let me know if you have any other ideas on what to add to the salad:) I am sure there are be many GREAT Combinations!

Have a Healthy Day!

momforhealthyhomeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14702598343782434069noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7247269353499809198.post-30906446694813029862011-05-03T20:38:00.000-07:002011-05-03T20:38:28.955-07:00Salad WeekHow many of you like chocolate? Ice Cream? Soda? Donuts?Cookies? Wait....pie! Oh I LOVE pie! What about any of you? Come on...don't be shy, I know there are more of you out there, you just won't admit it!! As much as I love being healthy and feeling optimal, that is how much I also love my sweets....which is my downfall. I have TRIED to go sugar-free, vegan or at least limit my intake of animal products and you want to know what happened? I quit! I threw a big fit, ran right over to the grocery store and hoarded anything and everything that I could get my hands on that wasn't considered....well," legal." So here is the deal, if I eat mostly healthy, then I can indulge right? OF COURSE RIGHT! So this week I am declaring Salad Week.I will be eating nothing but salads until friday.....{shivers in shoes}...I really don't know if I can do it! Because lately, my eating habits have nosedived. Have you ever had ice cream for breakfast? It sure is yummy, but results in not-so-good energy(which is vital when you have two VERY BUSY babies). Don't get me wrong, I take my vitamins and they are the ONLY thing that seems to be sustaining me. However, I can only do that for so long. So, for salad week I will be exploring all kinds of green salads with PLENTY of vegetables, salad dressings, fruit, meat etc. I will be posting the recipes, pictures and giving reviews on how I feel and if any sugar craving pop up. I am guessing, I will feel so much better!

Then at the end of the week maybe I can hork a pie:) And it won't put me in the dog house!

Have a Healthy Day! Thanks for stopping by:)momforhealthyhomeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14702598343782434069noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7247269353499809198.post-240545119760097752011-05-02T17:05:00.000-07:002011-05-02T17:05:01.560-07:00WDYD: What Do YOU Do?So, I am just curious...

I know everyone has some sort of ailment whether it be permanent or temporary. Or if you are like me, you have both! I struggle with depression which has resulted in taking medication and counseling. It runs in my family...

But, even though we all struggle with our varies physical, emotional, mental and even spiritual challenges, there are ways to improve our situation! I want to know how you all have improved your situation(s). Either with mediations, miracle creams, vitamins, or even eating better! I know MANY people who have turned their life around by just eating better. One of my favorite fixes is humor...I love to laugh!

Or if you are looking to improve your situation. I would love comments and questions! (This will also give me some GREAT ideas on more blog ideas:)

Thanks so much everyone!
I have been working from home to try and bring my business to the next level! Which I did{deep curtsy}.

I promise a product review this next week! I want to show you all that going green can mean saving money and cleaning just as effectively as chemically saturated cleaners...who knew right? I honestly thought "going green" was an annoying slogan that only weirdos participated in....now I am one of them!!! I can't help it! It is just better, safer and healthier. And did I mention cheaper?

Alright I am done for the night but, I promise I will keep up this week! I just wanted to post so y'all{my family is living in Texas, so I give a shout out once in a while} don't think I forgot about ya!

What if your child came home from school and told you that he or she is no longer allowed to bring a lunch from home?! Not only that,but you had to pay for a school lunch everyday or your child will go hungry! Sounds ridiculous right? I mean, who has the right to tell us what to feed our children!! Sheesh! Well, guess what? A elementary school Prinicpal in Chicago, Illinois did just that! Can you believe it? True story! I couldn't believe it either so I tracked down the story and THERE IT WAS! In the Chicago Tribune...plain as the nose on my dog's face.

Here is the scoop:"At [this] public school, Little Village Academy on Chicago's West Side, students are not allowed to pack lunches from home. Unless they have a medical excuse, they must eat the food served in the cafeteria. Principal Elsa Carmona said her intention is to protect students from their own unhealthful food choices.
'Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school,' Carmona said. 'It's about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve (in the lunchroom). It's milk versus a Coke. But with allergies and any medical issue, of course, we would make an exception.' Carmona said she created the policy six years ago after watching students bring "bottles of soda and flaming hot chips" on field trips for their lunch(Who eats healthy on a field trip anyway?Come on lady, it's a basic kiddom rule!). Although she would not name any other schools that employ such practices, she said it was fairly common. A Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman said she could not say how many schools prohibit packed lunches and that decision is left to the judgment of the principals."
More money in the pocket of the School District! And if your child doesn't qualify for a free lunch, you will be forking over twice, if not more money for your child's "healthier lunch" each day OR they go hungry....end of discussion. I personally would like to see what kind of "healthier choices" they have at this school. Because I don't consider a few tomatoes and carrots sprinkled on a wad of ice burg lettuce with a mound of ranch dressing very healthy. I'd rather give my child a PB&J sandwich for crying out loud!

And if they weren't making unhealthy choices to begin with, do you really think they will eat a head of broccoli just because some principal banned lunch-ables? I think not! And as I was researching around, I found an article about McDonald's chicken nuggets. However, when I read this article, YIKES! I can't believe I ate that! Want to know what I found? Here is the list of the ingredients(taken from McDonald's website) from the famous chicken mcnuggets....bummer:(
So, what do we do instead? How do you tell your kids they are never allowed to eat a Happy Meal again?(at least without the chicken nuggets). I can only imagine what kind of water work display would take place. And I can't stand the idea that I would be the cause of that for you. So, here I come to rescue the day! A RECIPE! I honestly have never tried this but it sure looks YUMMY! Have you ever heard of The Sneaky Chef? This lady has developed recipes to "hide" healthy stuff that kids don't want to eat. Now, I do have to warn you that you have to look at the ingredients in the recipes because although some great veggies are added to the recipe, there still contains too much sugar, fat and salt in some of them. Just because fries start out as vegitables doesn't make them healthy! So, I have an alternative recipe for chicken nuggets! YAY! If you make extra, just freeze 'em! Great for school lunches! You can also check out the nutritional value in these recipes too!
